Wife of Liverpool fan Sean Cox says he is 'overjoyed' by team's sixth European Cup success

THE wife of Liverpool fan Sean Cox who suffered serious injuries in an attack outside Anfield last year has told how he was "overjoyed" by the team's sixth European Cup success.

Mr Cox was pictured in a signed jersey at home in Co Meath with his family celebrating the victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid on Saturday night.

A photograph of the 54-year-old from Dunboyne with his son Jack was shared by Liverpool chief executive Peter Moore, who described in as as the "best" of the night.

Mr Cox suffered catastrophic head injuries in an attack outside a Champions League game with Roma in April 2018 and continues to receive round-the-clock treatment at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire.

He was discharged on Saturday to watch the game at home and returned to hospital "elated".

In a post of the Support Sean webpage, his wife said: "On Sean’s behalf, I want to offer our heartfelt congratulations to Liverpool Football Club on winning the Champions League.

"The club and its fan have taken Sean, our family and me into their hearts since Sean’s attack last year. Nobody could be happier than the Cox family for Jurgen Klopp, his players and the wonderful Liverpool fans.

"Sean watched the game with us at home, proudly wearing a signed Liverpool jersey sent to him by club CEO Peter Moore last week.

"He was overjoyed when the final whistle blew and Liverpool were crowned champions."

The Reds' victory sparked massive celebrations on the streets of Liverpool as tens of thousands of supporters turned out yesterday to welcome their heroes home.

Jurgen Klopp and his players boarded an open-top bus to show off their latest European trophy for a parade through the city.

Among the players was Cork-born Caoimhin Kelleher (20), who earned a coveted winner's medal and place on the podium as third choice goalkeeper.

The former Ringmahon Rangers stopper told RTÉ Sport: "I can’t describe to be honest. I can’t put it into words. I don’t know what to say. I’m speechless."

The win was also celebrated in Belfast yesterday where fans descended on the Liverpool store for souvenirs.

Commemorative t-shirts, caps and flags were snapped up as posters banner celebrating the club's sixth Champions League victory welcomed shoppers.

Meanwhile, Irish boxer Katie Taylor was also celebrating yesterday after she was crowned the undisputed lightweight champion of the world.

The Bray boxer narrowly defeated Delfine Persoon of Belgium at New York’s Madison Square Garden in a controversial points victory, with her promoter Eddie Hearn saying she will be determined for a rematch to "set the record straight".

Taylor said she felt "absolutely incredible" adding, "this is what I’ve dreamed of since turning pro".
