A small group of children at a leading Belfast school are to be screened for tuberculosis after a case of the infection was identified.

In a joint statement with the Public Health Agency (PHA), Methodist College Belfast said yesterday fewer than 10 pupils will undergo TB screening.

TB is spread through the air and usually affects the lungs.

The person who contracted TB has not been in school for several months.

Methodist College said the person's family have been screened for TB but do not have the infection.

The PHA said the risk of infection to pupils is low.

Any concerned parents can talk to staff from the PHA and Belfast Trust at the Whitla Hall from 7pm to 8pm today.

PHA staff are also available during office hours on 0300 555 119.
