A SCHOOL has broken the world record for the largest ever human Pi symbol.

Lismore Comprehensive School in Craigavon staged the attempt in memory of a Year 8 pupil who died suddenly.

Maddy-Leigh Harbinson (11) died in February after unknowingly developing Type 1 diabetes that resulted in multiple organ failure.

Guinness World Records confirmed the success, saying the largest human Pi symbol now consisted of 1,170 people. The record was attempted on Pi Day to also promote the mathematics department.

The school said it was delighted that all its hard work, team effort and input from so many people has been recognised by Guinness World Records.

"Our students were amazing on the day - in every way from behaviour and in the dignity and courtesy they presented," it added.

"As a school community we remember Maddy-Leigh Harbinson in a special way. Maddy-Leigh and her family continue to be in our prayers, thoughts and hearts as we celebrate our world record."
