VISITORS to Belfast’s Maritime Mile will now be able to strike up a conversation with previously silent landmarks such as ceramic sculpture 'The Big Fish' in a pilot tourism project.

Starting at Donegall Quay and ending at Alexandra Dock, locals and tourists can engage with objects including SS Nomadic, Titanic Belfast, Belfast Harbour, The Great Light and HMS Caroline.

Using an SMS enabled phone, they simply text 'Hello' to the particular landmark to start chatting.

The project, which will run for six weeks until St Patrick's Day, was launched yesterday by Belfast Lord Mayor, Councillor Deirdre Hargey, along with representatives from partner groups Titanic Foundation, Tourism NI, Ulster University (UU) and Hello Lamp Post.

Kerrie Sweeney, chief executive of the Titanic Foundation, said: “This is a fantastic partnership initiative encouraging visitors and local people to engage with the city’s iconic heritage waterfront in a unique and fun way.

"There is huge scope to animate different parts of the area through play, storytelling, spontaneous happenings and surprising use of space. We look forward to seeing everyone engaging with the objects along the Maritime Mile.”
