POLICE have launched a murder investigation after a man's body was found a flat in Newcastle, Co Down.

The deceased, who was 29-years-old, has been named as Pádraig Fox.

Police received a report of a body being discovered in Burrendale Park Road in the north of the town at about 1.45pm on Saturday.

Two men aged 21 and 26 have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Geoff Boyce said: “The man has been taken to Musgrave Police Station and is currently assisting with police enquiries."

SDLP MLA Colin McGrath said: "The death in Newcastle will come as a complete shock to the community.

"News has filtered through over the weekend that a person has passed away in suspicious circumstances and is being investigated as a murder. 

"Such news always sends a chill through the community."

SDLP councillor Laura Devlin said: "A family will be dealing with this tragic news in the days leading up to Christmas and that will be just awful."

Police have appealed for information.
