A MAN accused of starting a fire in a north Belfast block of flats has been remanded in custody.

Colm McClenaghan appeared before the city's Magistrate's Court today charged with arson endangering life at the Flax Street complex where he lives.

The 27-year-old allegedly destroyed an apartment in the building belonging to NB Housing on September 29.

McClenaghan also faces a second count of possessing a knife with intent to commit assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

No further details were disclosed in court.

District Judge Fiona Bagnall raised issues over the availability of a bail address due to the "nature of the charge".

During the brief hearing, a PSNI officer confirmed police will be opposing McClenaghan's release.

The accused was remanded into custody to appear again via video-link on Friday, when a bail application may be mounted.
