SUSPECTED stolen paintings and a "significant" amount of ammunition have been found during searches in west Belfast.

The items were discovered after police carried out searches at St Mary's Gardens in the Beechmount area yesterday.

Officers searched a flat, and residents said police also searched a store room at the complex.

Families were evacuated from the flats during the operation.

Army bomb disposal officers were also called to the scene to examine the ammunition.

Police have appealed for information.
