Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has said he has "no hesitation" in cooperating with the gardaí in relation to the 1983 murder of Irish prison officer Brian Stack.

The former West Belfast MP has also accused Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin of "dishonest and pure party politicking" over comments made in relation to the ongoing police investigation.

Earlier this week a leaked email showed that in February the former West Belfast MP gave the names to Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan of four people suspected of involvement in killing the senior prison officer.

The four are all senior republicans and include elected representatives in Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Mr Adams said he was given the names by the victim's son Austin Stack, a claim strenuously denied by Mr Stack.

Writing in his blog on Friday evening Mr Adams re-iterated his stance that the names leaked in the email were provided by Austin Stack.

"If Mr. Stack had not given me the names? Why on earth would I say that I received the names from him if I didn’t?," Mr Adams wrote.

Mr Adams, who helped facilitate a meeting between the Stack family and the IRA in 2013 said he had been left "very disappointed" by the way in which this issue has turned out.

He also criticised the two main party leaders in the Republic for "opportunistic and contemptible" attacks in the Dáil on Tuesday. Mr Adams accused the pair of misrepresenting the context of his efforts to help the Stack family and his communication with the Stack family.

The Louth TD said he had "no information" on the death of Brian Stack and "never at any time" described those named as suspects.

"I have no hesitation in stating my preparedness to co-operate with the Garda on this," he said.

In Friday's Irish News Brian Stack urged Gerry Adams to tell gardaí who the Sinn Féin president believes was involved in his father’s 1983 killing.
