THREATS made to Housing Executive workers in north Belfast have been condemned.

It is believed maintenance workers at the Seven Towers in the New Lodge area were threatened earlier this week.

A spokeswoman for the Housing Executive said it had been made aware of “specific threats”.

“The Housing Executive takes these matters very seriously and the safety of people who work for us is paramount and we are now reviewing the provision of services to the blocks,” she said.

“We are calling for this threat to be withdrawn immediately and are currently seeking assurances from local community representatives.”

Sinn Féin north Belfast assembly member Carál Ní Chuilín condemned the threats.

“I am calling for the threats to be lifted immediately so that these workers can get back to work,” she said.

North Belfast SDLP MLA Nichola Mallon also condemned the threats, adding that the area was in "severe housing need".

“The individuals behind these threats to Housing Executive staff and contractors carrying out essential work do nothing but harm the community they claim to care about," she added.

"They don't represent this community. They should be ashamed of themselves.

"The work being carried out to improve the quality of life of local tenants cannot be disrupted by a small number trying to hold us back.

“The threats should be withdrawn immediately and the much needed maintenance work resumed as soon as possible.”
