A man shot in a paramilitary-style attack in Derry has been taken off the critical list at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Harry Boyle (25), of Lawrence Hill in the city, was shot twice in the leg on Monday night, hours before he was due to appear in court on drugs charges.

He was left in a coma after the attack at Magowan Park in the city’s Creggan area and transferred from the city’s Altnagelvin hospital to Belfast’s Royal Victoria, where his condition was upgraded to stable yesterday.

Judge Philip Babington was informed on Tuesday that Mr Boyle had been due to appear on drugs related charges but had not regained consciousness since the shooting.

Barrister Mark Reel said: “Those who would replace our system of justice by one of terror, violence and fear have taken it upon themselves to shoot Mr Boyle.”

Derry police chief Mark McEwan described it as a brutal attack and said those responsible did not represent the interests of any community.
