The Fire and Rescue Service now believes a fire which burned in a huge wood storage shed in Derry was started accidentally.

The blaze at Culmore Road in Derry burned for two days after 600 tonnes of willow woodchip caught fire. A huge plume of smoke could be seen across the city while people living in the Culmore and Shantallow areas were advised to keep doors and windows shut.

Fire fighters were called to the shed, on land belonging to businessman John Gilliland, shortly after 5am on Saturday.

While the fire was quickly brought under control, the nature of the material meant it was particularly difficult to extinguish. Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service spokesman, Warren Kerr said officers were able to ensure no damage was caused to properties adjacent to the shed. Mr Kerr said the incident was not malicious.
