Two GP practices in Co Armagh have announced they are to cease operations potentially leaving thousands of patients without a doctor.

Annagh and Waterside medical practices, which are within Portadown Health Centre, have said they are to hand back their contracts.

Both practices are set to close by the end of the summer.

UUP leader Doug Beattie said the “closure of these practices will have significant implications for patients in the Portadown/Craigavon area”.

“It is with a heavy heart that Annagh and Waterside Medical Practices have announced their decision to hand back their contracts and cease operations,” he told Armagh I.

“It underscores the challenges faced by healthcare providers in maintaining service continuity amidst evolving healthcare landscapes.

“The closure of Annagh and Waterside Medical Practices is undoubtedly a loss to the community, we remain hopeful for the future of healthcare provision in the area.”

The MLA added that “every avenue” will be explored in a bid to assist patients.

“Patients who have relied on Annagh and Waterside Medical Practices for their healthcare needs may understandably have concerns about access to essential medical services,” he said.

“However, I wish to assure patients that we are working closely with the local healthcare trust and other stakeholders to explore every avenue to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of care for all patients affected by the closures.

“I understand that transitions of this nature can be unsettling for patients, and want to reassure them, the practice is committed to providing support and assistance throughout this process.

“Patients will be kept informed of developments and provided with guidance on accessing alternative healthcare services as necessary.”
