Former DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has been released on continuing bail after he appeared at Newry Magistrates’ Court to face a number of historical sex charges, including one count of rape.
His wife, Eleanor Donaldson (57), also appeared in court this morning, charged with aiding and abetting additional offences.
The pair appeared in the dock, separated by a custody officer.
During the short hearing, it was agreed bail conditions that had prohibited contact between the two defendants could be removed.
Wearing a grey suit and carrying a navy overcoat, Sir Jeffrey weaved his way through chaotic scenes as a media scrum of reporters, photographers and camera crews awaited his arrival at court this morning.
The 61-year-old looked straight ahead as he made his way into the magistrates court at around 9.30am on Wednesday.
Police officers attempted to keep the roadway clear during the large media scrum for his arrival.
The Lagan Valley MP (61) has been charged with 11 offences.
His wife, Eleanor Donaldson (57), will also appear, charged with aiding and abetting additional offences.
During the hearing, the Public Prosecution Service will outline the progress of the case, while a decision is also expected to be made on bail conditions.
Mr Donaldson and his wife were arrested on the morning of March 28, and were charged later that day.
The following day, the DUP announced it had suspended Mr Donaldson as a member, pending the outcome of a judicial process.
