Two people have been taken to hospital following a crash on the A5 road in Co Tyrone.

The crash involving several vehicles happened close to the Ballygawley roundabout shortly before 4pm on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said three emergency crews and an independent ambulance crew were despatched to the scene, alongside the Charity Air Ambulance.

“Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, two patients have been taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast,” the spokesperson said, adding that another patient was due to be transported to hospital following treatment at the scene.

In a social media post, the PSNI’s Police Mid-Ulster account advised that a road closure was in place.

“Please be aware and make alternative road diversions due to a road closure at Ballygawley Roadabout onto Omagh Road, diversion through Ballygawley Town centre,” a spokesperson said.

The A5 is considered one of the most dangerous roads in Ireland, with over 50 people having lost their lives on it since plans for a dual-carriageway upgrade were first announced at Stormont in 2007.

Earlier this month, 35-year-old Oonagh Burns from Strabane died after a crash on the A5 at Bready.

It is hoped the long-awaited upgrade can get underway following last year’s Public Inquiry into the project, and a funding commitment by the Irish government of 600 million euros.
