POLICE are investigating the death of a man in Co Down following a fatal fire at a caravan on Friday.

Details are still emerging about the incident, with the man named locally as Alan Smyth, known as Ally.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police can confirm that a man has died following a fatal fire at a caravan in the Killough Road area of Ardglass on Friday, February 9.

“Enquiries are continuing and there are no further details at this stage.”

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said a 999 call was received at 3am on Friday following reports of the incident.

One emergency crew was dispatched but no patients were taken to the scene.

A family notice on the Parish of Bright Facebook page said Mr Smyth was from Ardglass and a father of one.

“We pray for the family at this sad and difficult time,” the notice read.

The owners of the Coney Island Caravan Park on the Killough Road told the Irish News they were deeply shocked by the death but were unable to comment in detail as the investigation continues.

“Basically, we’re devastated. It’s not something that anyone wants to happen but it’s just very unfortunate for his family,” they said.

SDLP MLA Colin McGrath added: “Many in the community of Ardglass are stunned to hear the news that a local has passed away in the tragic circumstances of a caravan fire. My thoughts and prayers are with this gentleman’s family at this time.

“I understand that a police investigation is underway to determine the cause, and if anyone can help in any way with this I urge them to contact the PSNI.”
