A man has been given a suspended sentence for possession of knives in a public place.

Mohammad Tehran (42) of Kular Court in Derry was also charged with criminal damage to a glass panel on June 29 last year.

The court heard that police were called to a gaming premises after the defendant had been asked to leave.

He admitted damaging the window of Oasis in Shipquay Street after being asked to leave, causing £264 worth of damage.

Tehran was also charged with, on July 4 last year, being in possession of knives after police were called to the scene of a drunk man walking along Foyle Embankment barefoot.

When police arrived they found two knives in Tehran’s back pockets that he claimed had been used for cutting salmon. When police searched him they found a third knife. All three were seized.

Defence Barrister Stephen Chapman told the court that the main issue with Tehran seemed to be abuse of alcohol, noting that he has lived in the north of Ireland for a decade with no issues other than traffic offences.

He was sentenced to three months in custody, suspended for 18 months and ordered to pay Oasis £264 in compensation.
