A pedestrian who has died following a crash in Derry will be remembered as a someone who was “bubbly and full of craic”.

Jamesie Gallagher has been named locally as the man who died following the collision involving a black Volkswagen Golf in the Strand Road area last Sunday at around 1.40am.

He was critically injured and taken to hospital following the arrival of emergency services.

“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone who was travelling in the area at the time of the collision, or who has any CCTV, dash-cam or mobile phone footage that could assist with the investigation, is asked to contact detectives from the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference number 185 of 11/02/24,” a PSNI spokesperson said.

Foyle SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan said: “There will be a sense of shock in Derry today at this terrible news, as Jamesie was a well-known man. Many will remember him from his former bartending days. It’s heartbreaking for his family and friends, and my thoughts are with them all today and in the difficult days ahead.”

Mr Gallagher, who is understood to have worked in a local supermarket, had previously worked in Derry’s Metro Bar.

Bar manager Tony Toland paid tribute to his former colleague, and told the Irish News: “Jamesie was a very popular member of staff when he was here, always bubbly and full of craic.

“He still would have called in to see us and remained friendly with the team. We are all devastated at what has happened, and our hearts go out to his family and many friends.”
