A 59-year-old man arrested in south Belfast is facing extradition to the Republic to stand trial over drugs offences that took place in Kilkenny 12 years ago.

Officers from the PSNI’s International Policing Unit and Auto Crime Unit located the man on Wednesday

He is expected before an extradition court in Belfast on Thursday,

Sergeant Davey from the International Policing Unit said: “This is another example of the Police Service of Northern Ireland working closely with our international law enforcement partners to track down wanted persons and bring offenders to justice.

“We will continue our collaborative working to locate and arrest those sought for extradition.

“Our message is clear: Northern Ireland is not somewhere you can hide to avoid arrest or the consequences of your actions.”

Also on Wednesday, the same policing unit extradited a 30-year-old man from Northern Ireland to Poland to serve a sentence for burglary.

Having worked with Polish authorities on the matter, Sergeant Davey added: “If fugitives travel to Northern Ireland to avoid the consequences of their previous crimes it is only a matter of time before they are arrested and brought before the Extradition Courts.”
