Two men have been arrested as part of an operation focused on a field on the outskirts of Derry.

Police say the pair, aged 20 and 24, were detained under the Terrorism Act on Thursday evening “following searches in the city”.

The Irish News understands the arrests were in the vicinity of a field in the Glassagh Road area, which is close to the Creggan estate.

It is believed the focus of a police investigation is around a field in the district.

The two men, who were arrested by the PSNI’s Terrorism Investigation Unit, have been taken to Musgrave Street Police Station in Belfalst for questioning.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that two men, aged in their 20s and 50s, have been arrested in Co Louth as part of an operation targeting the New IRA.

The Irish army bomb squad was called in after a “hide” was discovered after a surveillance operation by the Garda National Crime and Security Intelligence Service (GNCSIS).

The Garda Special Detective Unit seized “component parts and suspected explosive material” following searches in the county on Friday, which was assisted by the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

Speaking about what gardaí described as a “long-running investigation”, Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly said: “This is a particularly significant find.

“This search and arrest operation by our counter-terrorism unit, the Special Detective Unit, demonstrates the important work carried out by Garda national security personnel every day to protect people on this island.

“It also shows that we must continue to degrade and dismantle the threat from those who are intent on destroying peace by harming others.

“I have been in contact with the PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher this morning and our close co-operation in relation to countering dissident groups continues.

“I would also like to thank the Defence Forces for its assistance in today’s search operation.”
