Police in Co Down have seized an uninsured car after the driver claimed the vehicle had been insured by Northern Ireland Secretary of State Chris Heaton-Harris.

The bizarre claim was made on Friday evening when police stopped the car in the Newcastle area after a detection system flagged it as uninsured.

The PSNI published an image of the vehicle, which displayed on its window a sticker with the logo of the far-right-linked conspiracy magazine ‘The Light’, to the NI Road Policing and Safety Facebook page.

Speaking of what happened after the car was stopped by officers, a PSNI spokesperson said: “The driver claimed the Secretary of State Chris Heaton-Harris had insured his vehicle and that it was not a car/motor vehicle but a conveyance.

“Further roadside checks showed there was no policy of insurance and that the driver didn’t have a Driving Licence.”

They added: “The vehicle was seized and the driver will now have a day in court to explain their ‘beliefs’ to a judge.”
