“The committee, coaches, boxers, and wider family circle of Bishop Kelly ABC are sending all our thoughts, prayers and love to our boxer Tiernan Donnelly who is seriously ill in hospital following a RTC,” the club said.

“We are asking you all for continued prayers for Tiernan and his family at this difficult time.

“One punch at a time , One step at a time. Keep fighting T.”

The appeal has seen numerous posts from social media users wishing the teenager a speedy recovery.

One said: “Keep on fighting Tiernan”, while another added: “Stay strong champ, wishing you a speedy recovery”.

Two other teenagers were also injured in the crash, which involved a blue Honda Civic Sport.

Police said on Saturday that “two other boys, aged 17 and 16, who were also in the car, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries”.

“Our investigation is now underway to establish exactly what happened,” a spokesperson said.

“We would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have dash-cam footage of the blue Honda Civic Sport vehicle in the Springhill Road and nearby areas, to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1333 16/02/24.”
