The priest at the funeral of Blake Newland has urged his family and friends to focus on the happy memories of the teenager following his murder.

Hundreds of mourners gathered at the young man’s grandmother’s house in Limavady on Thursday to say their final farewells.

The 17-year-old died last Friday night after suffering stab wounds to his chest.

Monsignor Bryan McCanny told the funeral service in Shanreagh Park that Blake had died in “horrific and tragic circumstances”.

He praised the dignity and respect that the family had shown and urged them to continue to support each other.

The priest said he hoped those who knew Blake would focus on the happy memories they had of the teenager.

Two brothers - Stephen (27) and Andrew McGlinchey (29) - have been charged with his murder.

A court heard earlier this week that Blake was targeted in a “revenge” attack.

The brothers, with respective addresses on Dunmore Place and Roe Mill Gardens in Limavady, appeared before Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena, via video-link.

Andrew McGlinchey was further charged with assaulting a police officer.

Both suspects were remanded into custody.

Two youths, both aged 16, appeared separately before the same court accused of unlawfully and maliciously causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
