‘Substantial’ drugs seizure at port of Cork

Gardai said the drugs seized are believed to be synthetic.

Gardai said a substantial drugs seizure has been made following an operation at the port of Cork.

Two men have been arrested following the seizure of what is believed to be synthetic drugs on Friday.

In an update on Friday evening, Revenue officers said that 546kg of synthetic drugs with an estimated value of €32.8 million were seized at Cork Port.

A result of a joint operation conducted by Revenue’s Customs Service and An Garda Síochána, a follow up investigation is currently being conducted by the Garda Kerry Divisional Drugs Unit.

Two firearms were also seized by Gardaí arising out of searches conducted.

Two men in their 40s have been arrested and are currently being detained at Garda Stations in the Kerry region.

Investigations are ongoing.

Earlier on Friday, a gardai spokesperson said: “Following a joint operation at Cork Port between An Garda Siochana and Revenue’s Customs Service, a substantial drugs seizure was made this morning, Friday, 16th February 2024.

“It is understood to be a synthetic drug, pending analysis.

“A number of follow up searches were conducted in Kerry and Cork resulting in the arrests of two men.

“The men, both aged in their 40s are currently detained at garda stations in the southern region under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.”
