A second garda officer has appeared in court facing charges following an anti-corruption investigation into a Dublin Gardaí unit.

A probe by the Garda Anti-Corruption Unit into a unit in the Dublin region has so far led to the arrest of four officers, who have been suspended from duty.

Tuesday’s charges of a garda sergeant at Dublin District Court is the second court appearance linked to the investigation, following charges against another officer last week.

At Tuesday’s hearing, Ciaran Whelan (51) with an address in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, was charged with seven offences alleged to have been committed between June and September 2021, and he will now be sent forward for trial.

The court heard he was arrested and charged on March 11, and gave no reply after caution.

Mr Whelan is charged with the false imprisonment of a woman at an address in Dublin in September 2021, and charged with perverting the course of justice by making a false report to a superintendent between August 25 and September 15, 2021, relating to the search of a Dublin flat in June of that year.

He also faces charges of theft at two Dublin flats in June and September 2021, and is charged with intent to pervert the course of justice by amending data on the Garda Pulse system in September 2021.

Mr Whelan is charged with two counts of perverting the course of public justice in August 2021 by allegedly creating and printing a search warrant and information for a search that occurred at one of the Dublin flats that June.

He is also accused of creating an incident on the Garda Pulse system in relation to that search.

Mr Whelan was remanded on bail to appear in court again on May 17.

Last Tuesday, Garda Mark Duffy (39) appeared before Dublin District Court charged with intent to pervert the course of public justice between August and December 2021.

He was also charged with burglary relating to a Dublin flat in June 2021

He was remanded on continuing bail to appear again on May 17.
