A woman and her two children have been killed in a crash in Co Mayo.

The collision happened on Tuesday on the N17 at Castlegar near Claremorris at around 2pm.

All three died when their vehicle was in collision with a lorry.

The bodies of the victims have been taken to Mayo University Hospital ahead of post-mortem examinations.

No other injuries were reported in the collision.



A Gardaí spokesperson said emergency services remain at the scene of the crash, and the road remains closed in both directions, with local diversions in place.

A forensic collision investigation is to take place and the spokesperson added: “Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.”

They added: “An Garda Síochána is aware that images of the crash scene are currently in circulation. Out of respect for the family, we are requesting these images are not shared.”

Meanwhile, two people have died following a house fire in the Swinford area of Co Mayo, just 30km from the crash scene.

The blaze broke out at around 2am at a house in the Deerpark area on Tuesday morning.

The fire was extinguished upon the arrival of emergency services and Gardaí said one body has been recovered from the residence.

The scene has been preserved pending a technical examination by Gardaí.
