Health minister Robin Swann says he does not believe schools can return as normal in January.

Mr Swann said his position was based on scientific advice. He was speaking during an extraordinary meeting of the Assembly today.

"I do not believe that a return to school as normal in January is a sustainable position," the health minister said.

"My view on this matter is informed by advice from the chief medical officer and chief scientific adviser."

He said they were attempting to suppress Covid-19 transmission at such a critical phase.

"All options should be considered."

Education Minister Peter Weir is expected to make a statement later.
