County Tyrone construction group McAleer & Rushe has been appointed to deliver a £52 million office redevelopment scheme in an upmarket area of west London.

The Cookstown-based group’s design and build division has been named principal contractor for the Wellcome Trusts new project in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea.

Established in 1936 by pharmaceutical entrepreneur Henry Wellcome, it is among the world’s wealthiest charitable foundations and one of the UK’s largest funders of scientific research.

The £52m project involves the redevelopment of a site at Pelham Street into a five-storey modern office building, totalling 114,000 sq ft.

McAleer & Rushe said it will employ a contextual architectural approach, incorporating traditional materials such as stone and brick whilst drawing inspiration from surrounding heritage and neighbouring buildings.

The design also provides for green roofs and terraces, improved pedestrian experiences at street level, and the retention of gym facilities.

Darragh Greenan, director at McAleer & Rushe, said: “80 Pelham Street, located in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, is a prime example of our expertise in delivering modern, efficient workplaces that enhance the local environment and support the wellbeing of occupants.”

Robert Coke from The Wellcome Trust, added: “This is a landmark scheme for the Wellcome Trust and we’re delighted to appoint McAleer & Rushe as our trusted contractor.

“Their proven expertise and responsible approach give us full confidence as we move into the next phase to deliver vibrant new office space that will generate new jobs, attract talent and bring fresh energy to Brompton Cross.”

Enabling works are already underway, with McAleer & Rushe expected to complete the contract by October 2027.
