A 22-year-old Co Tyrone man who died following a weekend road crash has been remembered as a "real wee gentleman".

Darren Gallagher from Gortin, was the the driver of a blue coloured Opel Astra car, which was involved in the single vehicle collision on the Beltany Road at Omagh in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He was the second young man to lose his life on Northern Ireland's roads in recent days, after Reece Kelly (22) from Draperstown died in a single-vehicle collision near Bellaghy, Co Derry on Thursday.

The latest fatal crash occurred close to the Drumlegagh Road at around 4.20am and the road - the A5 linking Derry to Dublin - was closed in both directions near the junction until yesterday afternoon.

Following news of the death an outpouring of sympathy was expressed online, with cousin Dean McCullagh describing Mr Gallagher as "like a big brother" to him.

"To say I'm heartbroken is an understatement. You weren't only my big cousin but you were more like a big brother too (sic) me. I'll miss you more than you'll ever imagine Darren. Rest easy lad and help all your family, friends and Shannon thru (sic) this difficult time. I'll always remember you," he wrote.

Another friend said Mr Gallagher was a "real wee gentleman".

Sinn Féin Omagh councillor, Marty McColgan described the death as an "absolute tragedy".

"My thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends at this difficult time. It is an absolute tragedy for someone to lose their life in these circumstances at such a young age," he said.

The PSNI has appealed for anyone who was travelling on the Beltany Road at the time, who witnessed the collision to get in touch.
