Air, land and sea search under way for Co Clare fisherman

AN AIR, land and sea search is under way in Co Clare after a fisherman was swept out to sea.

The man was fishing in the Pulleen Bay near Doonbeg on Saturday morning, when the alarm was raised at around 9am by another man who was with him.

The Coastguard and Gardaí were alerted and a major search began.

Since Saturday almost 20 divers from local diving clubs have been helping in the efforts to locate the man.

It is understood he is in his 40s and originally from Russia, but has been living in Limerick.

A Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter was sent to the scene, while the Kilkee and Doolin units of the Coastguard were also dispatched.

The helicopter has been searching along the coast between Kilkee and Doonbeg, with several boats also searching Pulleen Bay.

Coastguard volunteers and Gardaí are also searching the nearby cliff top and shoreline.

The operation is being co-ordinated by the Coastguard marine rescue centre in Valentia.
