FIVE people - including a prison officer - arrested as part of an investigation into smuggling banned items into Maghaberry Prison have been released on bail.

The 50-year-old jail warder was among those detained at the top security Co Antrim facility in the joint operation between the PSNI and Prison Service.

The officer was detained at the jail on suspicion of conveyancing prohibited articles into a prison, misconduct in public office, possession of criminal property and being concerned in the supply of Class A Drugs.

He was arrested as he arrived for work at the jail on Tuesday.

Four further arrests were made and three properties searched in Newtownabbey, Belfast and Kinallen, Co Down as part of the investigation.

Police seized £10,000 cash as well as a quantity of suspected Class A and Class B controlled drugs and a number of mobile phones.

All five people arrested were later released by police pending further enquiries.
