Funeral of Dungiven road victim Ryan McCaul to take place on Friday

THE funeral will take place on Friday of former Derry GAA club player Ryan McCaul who was killed in a car accident near his home.

The 31-year-old died when his Audi car was in collision with a Transit van on the Foreglen Road near Dungiven early on Monday morning.

Floral tributes were left at the scene of the crash on Monday with Mr McCaul’s remains expected to be returned to his home at Drum, near Dungiven on Wednesday night.

A former Gaelic footballer with St Colm’s GAA club, Drum, Mr McCaul’s career was cut short when he was seriously injured in a road accident more than a decade ago.

It has also been revealed that he overcome cancer, once recovering from leukaemia and later recovering from meningitis.

He played soccer for Co Derry club, Burnfoot FC and also lined out for his school rugby team while a pupil at Limavady Grammar before later moving to St Patrick’s College, Maghera.

A keen runner, he took part in the Chicago marathon last year and the New York marathon the year previously.

Requiem Mass will take place at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Gortnaghey at 11am on Friday.
