THE funeral took place yesterday of a pensioner found tied up on a chair and stabbed at his home last week.

Family and friends of Eddie Girvan (67) gathered for his funeral in Carrickfergus yesterday, a week the shocking discovery at the pensioner's Greenisland home.

Dozens of mourners gathered for a service of thanksgiving for his life, which was held in Mulhollands Funeral Home.

Mr Girvan, who was separated, was later buried in Victoria Cemetery in the Co Antrim town.

The father-of-two was discovered dead at his home on Station Road on January 18.

The antiques enthusiast's hands had been tied behind his back and he had suffered a stab wound to his chest.

He was found by chance when two police officers making routine enquiries called at his home.

A 29-year-old homeless woman appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court last week charged with his murder.

Margaret Henderson, with an address at the Ormeau Centre hostel on Verner Street in Belfast, was arrested in the city shortly after the discovery of Mr Girvan's body.

Appearing in court, she was asked if she understood the charge against her, she replied: "Aye".

A detective inspector said he believed he could connect Ms Henderson to the retired plumber's killing.

She was remanded in custody until a further hearing next month.

Two other men arrested along with Ms Henderson were released unconditionally.
