A well-known Derry doctor has announced plans to stand as an independent in the next assembly elections.

Anne McCloskey (58), a GP at the city’s Shantallow health centre, said she wants to give voters an alternative to existing political parties which she claimed had failed to deliver for the people.

She said many independent candidates have proved successful south of the border and in councils in the north and can work together to achieve results.

“I’m fed up with the dance macabre of these main parties who are doing nothing,” she said.

Dr McCloskey described herself as left wing, republican and pro-life.

The medic’s decision to run as an independent is being supported by the five independent members of Derry City and Strabane District Council.
