Toddler critical after garden pond accident

A TODDLER was last night in a critical condition in hospital after falling into a pond in south Armagh.

The 16-month-old boy is understood to have been visiting a grandparent's house in Crossmaglen when the accident happened on Friday.

It is believed the child wandered off from the house on the Ballsmill Road at around 3.30pm.

Reports suggested that following a search of the house, the little boy was found in a garden pond at the rear of the property.

Police said they had received a report that the young child had fallen into the pond.

He was rushed to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast later that night.

A PSNI spokesman last night said they were investigating.

"Police received a report at around 3.30pm on Friday July 24 that young child had fallen into a pond at a property in Crossmaglen and was being taken to hospital for treatment," he said.

"The child is currently in a critical but stable condition in hospital and police enquiries into the incident are ongoing."
