THE death of a father and son found at a house in Co Fermanagh is the second tragedy to hit the family in the space of a year.

The bodies of pensioner Johnny McNally and his son Holden - who was in his 30s - were discovered by a relative at their home in Patrick's Terrace in Lisnaskea on Monday.

It is understood the bodies were found in separate rooms of the property. Police have said they are awaiting the result of a post mortem examination to establish how the men died.

The tragedy comes a year after Mr McNally's daughter Lorna Boyle was found dead in a flat in the Amepolkipoi area of Athens. Her 52-year-old boyfriend was arrested on suspicion of murder.

The 48-year-old had lived in Greece for a number of years and worked in bars around the city. Her body is thought to have been in the flat for several weeks before being discovered after neighbours raised the alarm.

Her body was found on June 8 last year - almost exactly a year before the latest tragedy.

Mr McNally's wife is believed to be in ill-health and residing in a nursing home on Enniskillen.

Sinn Féin MLA Sean Lynch, who knew the family, said it was a "tragic set of circumstances".

"Considering what happened in Athens last year this is an awful tragedy. At the minute we don't know the full circumstances but people locally are stunned."

SDLP councillor Ritchie McPhillips said the tragedy was made "all the more poignant" coming so close to the first anniversary of Ms Boyle's sudden death.

"This has been a terribly sad time and our thoughts are with the wider family circle at this sad time", he added.

Lisnaskea parish priest Fr Joseph Mullin said the community had been left stunned by what he described as a "profound tragedy".

"We have seen our share of tragedy over the years and this is the latest family that needs to be shouldered and supported by the community," he said. "The community will do that. They will stand shoulder to shoulder with the family."

Fermanagh and South Tyrone MP Tom Elliott also expressed his shock.

"My thoughts are with the family of these men," he said. "They have been thrown into tragedy. It is a really difficult time for the family and community."
