Gun death Garda did not know he had been cleared

AN inquiry has been launched into a delay in notifying a Garda sergeant who took his own life that he had been cleared in a formal Ombudsman investigation.

Michael Galvin, a senior figure in the GAA, shot himself dead at Ballyshannon Garda station last Thursday. A former Sligo county footballer and county hurling team manager, Mr Galvin told colleagues had feared the outcome of a Garda Ombudsman investigation into a complaint made against him.

It is believed the complaint was linked to a fatal hit and run accident in Ballyshannon on New Years Day and centred on where the victim had been standing when Mr Galvin drove past on his way to investigate another road accident.

Mr Galvin, a father of three, was interviewed under caution by the Republics Garda Sochna Ombudsman Commission (GSOC). However, it was revealed on Monday that he was cleared of any wrongdoing a full five days before his death.

The GSOC also revealed on Monday that a letter confirmed the news was not sent to Mr Galvin. The GSOC has confirmed that an internal review of the case has been initiated. Senior members of the Gardai were due to meet the Ombudsmans office yesterday.
