Banksy among work to go under hammer at Armagh auction house

ART lovers from across the world will be keeping their eye on a Co Armagh auction house this weekend as they take bids for work by one of the most celebrated graffiti artists.

One piece created by Bansky has already attracted bids of £2,000 with a flurry of interest expected before the online auction closes on Sunday.

The 'Welcome To Hell' piece by Banksy is among a number of artworks on offer, including Stik and Cranio, from Auctions NI in Lurgan.

Colin Creaney, director of the company, said it was "not often a provinicial auction gets the chance of selling of artwork such as this".

The Banksy artwork forms part of a series of his prints depicting, in various forms, his most iconic character the rat, which just happens to also be an anagram of art.

As well as being synonymous with Banksy in recent years the rat series is said to pay homage to one of Europe's stencil graffiti pioneers Blek Le Rat, of which Banksy's work is hugely influenced.

Originally from Bristol, Banksy's stencils have become immensely popular through out the UK and his subversive images can be seen daubed on walls throughout the world.

Mr Creaney said the artwork on offer, particularly by Bansky, had attracted major interest.

"This is very unusual to get so many pieces of street graffiti artwork together at one time," he said.

"It's not often a provincial auction gets the chance of selling of artwork such as this.

"We have already had international interest from around the world, Italy, France, London - as I say, it's unusual to have so many together at one time.

"In the process, we also many local artists such as JP Rooney, Roy Wallace and Gregory Moore, whose work is fantastic."

The timed auction, where bids are placed online, closes tomorrow evening at 7pm.
