Assault victim in critical condition

A 34-Year-Old man last night remained in a critical condition in hospital after he was assaulted in Co Antrim. The victim, named locally as Steven Gage, is understood to have been attacked following a dispute out-side a pub in the Main Street area of Cloughmills. It is believed Mr Gage, who is under-stood to work as a chef in the Millside restaurant in the village, had been enjoying a few drinks after work. Police last night said that a 26-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the serious assault early on Monday morning. He was detained in the Coleraine area. A police spokesman said that the attack was reported shortly before 2.40am. Four roads were closed for several hours as police investigated the incident which happened on Main Street, close to its junction with the loughill road and drumadoon road. Mayor of Ballymoney, DUP councillor John Finlay said people in the village had been left shocked by the assault. "People really can't believe that this has happened," he said. "This man is well-known in the village as well as his family. My sympathies and prayers are with him and his family and I hope that he makes a full recovery. "For this to happen at all is terrible, but particularly at Christmas time." Police have appealed for anyone with information on the incident to contact them on 0845 600 8000.
