Father's sudden death may be linked to 'bad batch' of drugs

THE sudden death of a 30-year-old father-of-one in west Belfast may be linked to a bad batch of drugs.

The man, named locally as Kevin Doherty, pictured, from the lower Falls area, was taken to hospital on Tuesday morning after attending a party in Ross Street.

He died soon afterwards.

It is thought that at least four other people, one of them a woman, who attended the same party were also hospitalised.

Two men were placed in induced comas but were recovering last night.

Police are investigating but said they are waiting for the results of toxicology tests. Falls community worker Benny Lynch said Mr Doherty's family were "devastated".

He said the young man was a "character" and was heavily involved in sport.

Sinn Fein West Belfast MP Paul Maskey said: "There are very major concerns among us all that drugs were involved and this has now caused the death of a man. "It is very clear to all of us that there are bad batches of drugs out there." Community groups met police in the lower Falls yesterday to discuss the drug problem.
