The loss of a family pet can be a painful experience, but when Gretchen the dog died her owners made sure her pals had something to remember her by.

Fernando Barboza, from Texas, is a postman who gave out treats to Gretchen and her chums on his route – and he received a letter informing him of Gretchen’s death, as well as a few treats for his other canine customers.

“My dad is a mailman and he likes to give dogs on his route treats,” wrote Ailyn Barboza, Fernando’s daughter.

“Today he told us one of the dogs on his route passed away and his owners gave him this bag of treats with this note”.

The note read: “Gretchen passed away yesterday. She asked me to ask you if you would share her treats that she never got to finish with the other dogs on your route.

“She always enjoyed seeing you come to the door and was always happy to get a snack from you. Thank you.”

The tweet melted the hearts of thousands on social media, receiving more than 850,000 likes on Twitter and prompting a flurry of comments.

Furthermore, one of Gretchen’s owners appeared to respond to the post.

“My wife and I were told about Gretchen’s letter to Fernando being on Twitter,” wrote Twitter user @DeCuervo2.

“I can’t begin to tell y’all how much it has meant to us seeing how much love and support y’all have shown our girl.

“She was the absolute best. This is a short video of her seeing her mailman”.
