Up and at it - what is your morning routine?

I am not a morning person at all, so on work days the alarm is set for 7.30am as I need to be up and out as quickly as possible, otherwise I'd just switch off my alarm and go back to sleep. My morning routine consists of showering, dressing, doing make-up, packing fruit and yoghurt and some breakfast and jumping in the car. As I have either a 30-minute or one-hour commute to work, I also grab a quick cup of tea to take with me. Weekends are different – on Saturdays I'm up at 8.15am to shower then head to the river for a training session with my fellow Lagan Dragon Paddlers. Lagan Dragons are Northern Ireland's first ever dragon boat club for people affected either directly or indirectly by breast cancer. The club offers tremendous support to everyone who comes along.

2

What might you eat in a typical working day for...Breakfast?

Either yoghurt with banana and kiwi fruit or chia seeds, fruit chunks in oat milk and – one day a week – two poached eggs and a hash brown.

Lunch?

Usually a ham salad sandwich or a main meal from the office canteen.

Evening meal?

Either something with meat and veg or a sandwich, depending on what I had for lunch.

3

Is nutrition important to you – do you take health supplements?

Yes, I try to eat healthily with plenty of fruit, veg, protein and fish. I take vitamin D, B12, multi-vitamins and omega 3.

4

Ever been on a diet – if so, how did it go?

No, I prefer exercise and eating as normally and healthily as I can rather than dieting. I don't think that I have the discipline for a diet, as it always looks like hard work. I did the cabbage soup diet in my early 20s, though, when it was all the rage – it was awful.

5

Weekend treat?

A nice bottle of red wine with a good meal and a packet of Marks and Spencer crisps. Alternatively, going out for dinner with friends.

6

How do you keep physically and mentally fit?

I exercise four days a week – that will be with the Dragons or else cycling, running or walking. I keep mentally fit by talking to friends or colleagues, reading mindfulness books and creating goals for myself.

7

Best tip for everyday fitness?

Any movement is exercise, so if you don't want to put in hours in the gym, just go for a walk in the countryside or somewhere close by.

8

Were you a fan of schools sports/PE or do you have a memory from those days that you would rather forget?

I was a massive fan of all sports while at school. I was on the cross-country team and hockey team and I swam and ran for my school house team. I much preferred being on a hockey field than being stuck in a classroom. Sports days at school were always my favourite day of the year. I remember that my dad was one of the few parents who came to watch. I also did extra-curricular activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, which I did to gold level, and skiing – basically anything I could to avoid homework.

9

Teetotal or tipple?

Tipple. I do like a nice relaxing glass or two of red wine with friends to unwind after the working week.

10

Stairs or lift?

Stairs. I once did a charity event where I ran up 51 floors of a hotel in aid of Médecins Sans Frontières.

11

What book are you currently reading?

I actually have a bit of a habit of reading two books at the same time and switch between them - one is Here's The Story, a memoir by Mary McAleese, and the other is The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. They are two very different books, but I am really liking both of them.

12

Best Netflix?

I don't watch a lot of TV or Netflix, but I love The Big Bang Theory – you've just got to love Sheldon.

13

Most surprising thing you've learned about yourself over the pandemic?

I moved to Belfast during the pandemic when we were still in lockdown, so it was difficult as I didn't know anyone here. I think the biggest thing would be that I'm okay with my own company.

14

Any new skills or hobbies?

When I came to Belfast, I managed to find the Lagan Dragons, having done dragon boating before. I was delighted to find them as they are an awesome club to be part of.

15

How do you relax?

It took me a long time to master meditation, but I find it relaxing. I also like to read mindfulness books.

16

What are your goals for 2023?

I don't really set myself goals but I hope to stay fit and healthy.

17

What time do you get to bed, and do you think you get enough sleep?

It varies from 10.30pm-12.30am and no, I don't think I get enough sleep. I think, though, that you can get fixated with Fitbits and other devices and I don't know how accurate they are.

18

Biggest gripe or regret?

Following the teacher's advice on chosen career – I was told that going into sports/sports management was not the route I should take. Grant you, I was not going to be an Olympic champion, but I did want to do more sports management. However, I ended up going into banking after college.

19

Have your priorities in life or perspectives changed?

Probably, since returning from life as an ex-pat for several years I think that family have become more important to me.

20

Has coronavirus – or any health epiphany or life event - changed your attitude towards your own mortality?

No, I don't think so; we are not immortal, so coronavirus or any other event hasn't changed that fact. I say, 'Live life to the fullest and regret the things you did rather than the things you didn't'.
