In my view: Teach children how to cut dementia risk

Lifestyle plays a role in memory decline
Lifestyle plays a role in memory decline

It was usually in middle age, or just after when, prompted perhaps by a forgotten name or a momentary memory blip, patients would come to me asking if it was too late to take action to reduce their risk of dementia.

We know from research that lifestyle plays a role in a decline in memory. Many factors, including diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol intake and our social involvement with others, are all key.

But when is it too late to take action? The truth is, we don’t know for sure.

I believe we should do more to drill the idea into our children that healthy living can help spare you from devastating diseases.

The focus should not be on ‘When is it too late to take action?’ but on ‘When is it too early?’ The answer to that is ‘Never’.
