Yealands Sauvignon Blanc 2019, Marlborough, New Zealand, £8, Sainsbury’s

Yealands’ goal is to make top class wines using sustainable and environmentally-friendly methods. This award-winning offering sets the benchmark for a great Sauvignon Blanc and with 2019 cited as an outstanding vintage it is well worth a try. With all the citrusy, herbal characteristics you could wish for, guava and tropical fruit jump from the glass with a crisp, long finish and freshness.

Vinalta Malbec 2017, Mendoza, Argentina, currently £9,

Marks & Spencer

A Malbec which is bursting with plums, strawberries and spice with hints of lavender. It is full of energy and has a vibrant, fruity elegance. Deep, intense and smooth with delicate vanilla notes, rich black fruit with a slightly meaty edge, balanced acidity and fine tannins. Malbec traditionally works well with Sunday roasts, red meat dishes, roast pork or simply with a cheeseboard on a Saturday night.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Artusi Pinot Grigio, £5, was £7 until 2 February, Co-op

A modern, crisp style of Pinot Grigio from Italy’s Veneto region – this wine boasts ripe fruit and thirst-quenching acidity. White wines made with the Pinot Grigio grape can be a bit of a letdown but, for me, this example completely changes that. The yellow-green tinge of the wine follows with pear and melon aromas then finishes with fresh, crisp apple.
