MUSIC is twice as effective as creams for easing itchiness caused by conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema, the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology reports.

In a trial of 50 patients at Brest University Hospital in France, half were told to listen to music for 20 minutes, while the rest were given moisturisers to apply. They then rated how itchy they were.

Results show symptoms improved by 2.3 points in the music group compared to 1.2 in the moisturiser group. It is thought music distracts you and may inhibit nerve signals coming from the skin.
