A total of 1,354 young camogie players were given the opportunity to play on the prestigious turf of Croke Park, at the Allianz Camán to Croker event on June 9.

As part of acelebration of The Camogie Association’s 120th anniversary, U12 teams from 64 different clubs attended the event.

Coming from 24 counties, the young camogs played a series of ‘blitz’ matches at the hallowed stadium.

The event formed part of Allianz Ireland’s wider #StopTheDrop campaign, which focuses on promoting children’s continued participation in sport as they grow up.

With one in five children dropping out of sport when they move from primary to secondary education, Chief Customer Officer of Allianz Ireland, Goeff Sparling, hoped that the event would help reverse this trend. He said:

“We are focussed on ensuring that children reap the benefits they get from playing sport by continuing to participate as they move through the education system

“Events such as Camán to Croker provide young players with the chance to play the game they love on the peerless turf of Croke Park, giving them lifelong positive memories and encouraging their continued participation in sport.”

This was a sentiment echoed by President of The Camogie Association, Brian Molloy. He said:

“We hope that opportunities like this help ensure that they retain their enthusiasm for Camogie, and that they feel encouraged to keep playing this and other sports as they grow.”

“We all know the benefits of participation in team sports like Camogie and initiatives such as Camán to Croker, which naturally align with Allianz’s #StopTheDrop campaign reduce the number of players who drop out of sport.”
