Limerick claimed a third victory in a row, defeating Munster rivals Tipperary by eight points in their Tailteann Cup preliminary quarter-final.

Emmet Rigter and Danny Neville combined for 1-7 from play, with The Premier lacking cutting edge without talisman Conor Sweeney.

Manager Paul Kelly also announced he would stand down from his role, as their 2024 season came to a disappointing and definitive conclusion in Rathkeale.

A Paudie Feehan goal was the highlight of a low-scoring first-half, with goalkeeper Josh Ryan’s ‘45 a quick reply that saw Limerick lead by the minimum at the interval.

Any lead was a bonus, with Tipperary failing to score for the first fifteen minutes despite having the added advantage of a decent breeze.

And they were punished for their fruitless opening period, as the hosts hit five of the next six scores from five different scorers.

Rigter and Neville were to the fore, with Jimmy Lee’s men outsourcing Tipp’ 1-10 to 0-06 in the latter period to leave their manager “happy enough”:

“We’re happy we won, there’s a lot to work on, but there’s a lot of positives. Defensively we were a bit too open, decision making, shooting, but look it’d be worse if we have nothing to work on.”

Elsewhere on Saturday, Oisín McConville outwitted Andy Moran, as Leitrim crashed out of the Tailteann Cup.

Wicklow stalwart Dean Healy was phenomenal at centrefield, grabbing 0-4 of their 2-15 total, while NFL Interntaional Player Pathway star Mark Jackson slotted over two crucial dead balls.

Their purple patch came right after the break, with hugely talented full-forward Kevin Quinn proving a handful with three quickfire points.

Chris O’Brien’s flicked goal was the crucial score, giving The Garden County a three-point lead, and one they refused to relinquish from the 44th minute until the end.

The game’s last four scores were all for the ‘away’ side in Longford, putting a little gloss on the scoreline in what was an exciting encounter.

Barry McNulty was the goalscorer for Moran’s men, with the latter’s future unclear as his third year at the helm came to a conclusion in Glennon Brothers’ Pearse Park.

Wicklow and Limerick join Laois and Antrim in the hat for the draw, with one of the group phase table toppers awaiting them, namely Down, Kildare, Fermanagh and Sligo awaiting.
