THE GAA’s annual Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta will take place in the West Cork Gaeltacht of Múscraí between the May 31 and June 3.

The event is hosted by local club CLG Cill na Martra and all seven Gaeltacht counties will be represented, as well as clubs from Dublin and Antrim.

Ulster will be well represented by five clubs. Naomh Conaill of Donegal have reached the last two senior finals but lost out on both occasions – to Wolfe Tones of Meath and Cork’s Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh.

The Donegal club were Ulster’s most recent winners, in 2016, the last of five in a row for Donegal teams, with Naomh Conaill (2015), Kilcar (2014) and Gaoth Dobhair (2013 and 2012) the other winners.

Naomh Conaill won’t be involved this year, however, and Kilcar will be Donegal’s representative in the senior men’s division. They’ll face the two most recent winners as well as hosts, and last year’s All-Ireland Club intermediate finalists, Cill na Martra.

Ring (Waterford), Dingle (Kerry), Belmullet (Mayo) and Naomh Anna Leitir Móir (Galway) are the other four clubs that make up the eight-team senior competition.

Naomh Muire of Donegal and Antrim’s Laochra Loch Lao will take part in the junior men’s competition along with eight other clubs and Cill na Martra will also enter a team at this grade.

Clann na nGael (Meath), Lispole (Kerry), Na Gaeil Óga (Dublin), Cárna Caiseal (Galway), Kilcommon (Mayo), Naomh Abán (Cork), An Seanphobla (Waterford), are the other clubs involved.

Only two clubs will battle it out for the senior ladies’ title as Termon of Donegal lock horns with Galway’s Claregalway, while eight will contest the junior ladies’ competition.

Micheál Breathnach (Galway), Kiltane (Mayo), Naomh Finnbarra (Cork), Wolfe Tones (Meath), Cumann Caide Chorca Dhuibhne (Kerry), Clann na nGael (Meath), Na Gaeil Óga (Dublin) and Naomh Abán (Cork) are all set to take part.

This year sees the 53rd staging of Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta and more games than ever will be broadcast on TG4 and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, both proud partners of the competition.

Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta was set up in 1969 with the aim of bringing Irish speaking clubs and communities together for a weekend of football and many footballing greats have taken part in the competition over the years.

Kerry’s Muintir Uí Shé and Dara Ó Cinnéide, An Cheathrú Rua’s Seán Ó Domhnaill, Gaoth Dobhair’s Kevin Cassidy, Cill na Martra’s Noel O’Leary, Meath’s Graham Geraghty and Naomh Abán’s Micheál Ó Cróinín are to name just a few.
