WASTE management operation RiverRidge Holdings has expanded with the acquisition of a Belfast competitor.

It has bought Wastebeater Recycling which formed the waste trade business and assets formerly owned by Amber Merchants.

Wastebeater, one of the north's best known waste management companies, focused on the collection of commercial and industrial waste.

A statement issued by RiverRidge said the business offered "significant synergies" to its existing Belfast operation.

"All existing employees will transfer over to RiverRidge as part of the transaction," it added.

RiverRidge is Northern Ireland's largest independent waste management operator treating 400,000 tonnes of waste each year on behalf of councils, businesses and individual households.

It was started when managing director Brett Ross acquired a small skip hire and landfill site in 2011.

It has grown organically and through acquisitions into a fully integrated waste management business employing more than 200 people.

The company operates out of a number of sites located in Belfast, Coleraine, Derry and Portadown and was the primary developer of the £107m Full Circle Generation Energy from Waste facility located adjacent to Bombardier's wing facility in Belfast.

Earlier this year, the business became only the second company in Northern Ireland to secure a major equity investment from the Business Growth Fund (BGF).

It was given a £10 million cash injection from the BGF which it pledged to put towards supporting its continued growth strategy and to further develop existing treatment and operations infrastructure.
