SINÉAD O'Connor's hit single, "Nothing Compares 2 U", has climbed to number 37 in the Irish music charts following the 56-year-old artist's death last week.

The single, released in 1990, was the artist's most iconic song and has been touted by Billboard as one of the "greatest ’90s songs, greatest covers, greatest breakup songs, and greatest music videos" ever.

O'Connor's iconic break-up song has also reached number 45 in the UK music charts, it's highest position since April 8, 1990, beating songs such as Harry Styles' 'As It Was' and Mylie Cyrus' 'Flowers'.

Written by Prince, "Nothing Compares 2 U" was the only single by Sinéad O'Connor to reach number one on the Billboard top 100.

The Dublin-born singer's death sparked a nationwide reaction, with tributes coming in from across Ireland and further afield.

Before last weekend's All-Ireland senior football final, her number one single could be heard throughout the stadium, along with the iconic music video being played on the screens in Croke Park.

RTÉ ended it's coverage of the All-Ireland decider between Dublin and Kerry with a compilation of highlights from the game to the tune of 'Connor's 'Mandinka', a song from her debut album, "The Lion and the Cobra", released in 1987.
