Allianz Corn Gobnait Junior A Championship final

St Patrick’s, Maghera 0-9 Loreto, Kilkenny 4-10

A GOAL and four points over the final six minutes put a rather lob-sided look to the scoreboard at the end of this game in Darver yesterday, but it was their first two scores, goals from Aoife Shealy and Sarah Kehoe, that propelled Loreto to their 12th All-Ireland title.

Maghera were playing with the wind and had started well with a point from Cáit Conway. However, Shealy broke the line at half-forward and ran in for the first goal after five minutes.

Maghera had drawn level when Kehoe did the same getting a clear run for her goal.

That gave Kilkenny more than a foothold in the game and they went on to lead by 2-5 to 0-5 at the break.

Maghera, however, took the game to them for the opening 25 minutes of the second half with Branagh Brolly, Conway, Mary Therese McCullagh, Orla McCartney and Ellie Griffin driving them forward.

The Loreto defence led by player-of-the-match Anna Doheny held firm throughout and there were no real goal-chances to bring the Ulster champions into the frame for a shock victory.

Rhianna Doherty and Orla McCartney points took the gap down to four, but Doheny’s long free from defence found her sister Eleanor inside the Maghera cover and she found the net.

Maghera hit back with two frees from Conway, but were caught once again by a quick break from defence and Ciara Dunne put the result to bed with a goal in the 54th minute, quickly tagging on four points to add gloss to the scoreline.
